I grew up in a small town in Minnesota , Hawley, near the border of North Dakota where the vast American great plains begin. As children we were raised to be independent and were allowed to roam freely in nature; climbing trees, tramping through the fields, swimming, jumping, riding horses and then home for supper. Independent thinking and common sense and adventure were encouraged and set the table for a life in the arts.
I am also extremely lucky to have chosen the art school at Moorhead State College for my education. I owe the faculty and administration and my fellow students for all that am as an artist.
For twenty five years I was also a partner in Hest & Kramer music company, writing and producing music for television commercials and theater. We had studios in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. Our music is represented in the permanent collection at MOMA. Music and art have both been my passions and I’ve been lucky to have been able to pursue them both.
Oh, did I mention my parents, ”Go for it, it's your life.”
Two years ago Farzan and Sam Navab and I began producing hand made rugs using my paintings as the patterns. They have been in the rug business for thirty years and have contacts all over the East. Our collection is made in India.
The Magic on the Floors
The magic of these rugs is that they capture the essence of Bob’s paintings — his simple and honest positivity. His rugs bring the same warmth to our homes that his paintings bring to our walls. In a world full of hatred and conflict, Bob’s paintings and rugs give us an opportunity to imagine better days. Hope and happiness exude from the imagination of the artist, touching our lives in the best way possible.
